Our Journey

After I quit my job as a newspaper reporter, we were doing okay for awhile with Jerry's commercial fishing income. Until the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill disaster happened in Prince William Sound in Alaska. Even before that, commercial fishing was often a boom or bust situation. Celebrating a $25,000 payday for three weeks of King Crab fishing could be followed by a 12 week stint of fishing for black cod that ended with the crew OWING THE BOAT money because their catch didn't even cover the cost of fuel, bait, ice and groceries that the crew pays for not the boat. We never knew how long that $25,000 had to last. Without my modest steady paycheck, there was much less financial stability.
When we moved to Bend, I found some freelance work writing copy for ad agencies that helped a little. Almost all jobs in the area were for minimum wage and if I had to pay for child care I would basically have nothing left over to pay our bills. I was excited when I saw an ad for a Public Relations position at Central Oregon Community College (COCC) that paid $23,000 a year. The application was four pages long and they asked for college transcripts and three letters of recommendation. After three weeks of not hearing a word back, I found out that 400 people had requested the application, 160 had actually jumped through the hoops, that they had interviewed nobody from Central Oregon, and they had hired a person that had given up a six figure income on Madison Avenue in New York. It seemed like I was competing for a job with the entire Western Hemisphere at the time.
Imagine my excitement when through some friends I discovered a company where I could work from home and not need child care. I would be sharing products (that actually work) to help people get and stay healthy. It would be MY OWN business and the parent company would not only provided amazing support and websites, they would offer a CORPORATE BENEFITS PACKAGE to anyone who wanted to work hard and move up to the higher leadership positions. What??? Benefits? This was unheard of in commercial fishing. This business combined my twin passions of being my own boss and whole food nutrition. I dived in and mainly chasing the benefits package I was able to reach that goal in 22 months. The biggest surprise was that in doing so we (Jerry was helping out while he was fishing in Alaska by sharing the products within the fishing community) actually created the same income that Jerry averaged from fishing! Except that this income was money we could count on. So no brainer Jerry retired from fishing and joined our business back in Bend.
During that time when the boys were still in elementary school we were able to schedule our life and business around their schedule. We were often the only parents who were able to attend their school activities because we didn't have to go to our "jobs". Jerry was an amazing coach for the boys' basketball and baseball teams.
Now that the boys are grown and married with their own children, we continue to enjoy the income we have created that now seems like "retirement" income. Except that we are not yet ready to stop sharing the gift of good health and the freedom flexibility of owning a $52 a year franchise. These days our greatest joy is in mentoring new partners to achieve their goals, whether it be an extra $200-500 a month or beyond.
